Road Trips Vol. 4 No. 2?April Fools? ?88

Hailing from the well-regarded but seldom-recorded year of 1988 (this Road Trip marked the first physical release of any complete shows from that year), this 3-CD set offers all of the Dead's April 1, 1988 show at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ (a.k.a. The Meadowlands), plus over half of the show from the preceding night.

The Dead were, of course, one of the great cover bands of all time, and here you get some real corkers, like the second and final performance of Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man" on April 1 and a medley of "Dear Mr. Fantasy"/"Hey Jude"/"All Along the Watchtower" on March 31 (followed by a "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" encore)! April 1 also features the very rarely performed "To Lay Me Down," but for many, the pair of medleys opening the second set, "China Cat Sunflower"/"I Know You Rider" and "Estimated Prophet"/"Eyes of the World," will prove the highlight of the night, as Bob Weir in particular takes flight during "Estimated" and the band lifts off right after him. Big, full-color booklet, mastered by Jeffrey Norman in HDCD sound.
