More Light

By the time of More Light's release, indie-rock pioneer J. Mascis had already done everything from crafting a gentle, '60s-style pop song for a movie ("Take a Run at the Sun" from Grace Of My Heart) to collaborating with misanthropic shock-rocker G. G. Allin (on Hated In The Nation). The Dinosaur, Jr. founder does nothing so sneakily subversive as that on this album. Mostly he just turns the guitar up to 11 and blasts out trademark slacker anthems like "Where'd You Go" or "I'm Not Fine," or an occasional change of pace like the rather sweetly pop-flavored, keyboard-driven "Waistin,' " but he certainly sounds like he's having fun in the process. Mute.
