Alan Bridges directs this 1980s adaptation of the novel by Rebecca West. When Captain Chris Baldry (Alan Bates) returns from war, shellshock has caused him to lose years of his recent memories. When he fails to remember his wife Kitty (Julie Christie), he requests a meeting with his childhood sweetheart Margaret (Glenda Jackson) whom he remembers fondly.

Although Margaret is also married, she agrees to help Chris regain his memory and restore him to the man he was before the war.
