Dekalog and Other Television Works

All ten episodes of the acclaimed Polish drama series 'Dekalog', revolving around the consequences arising from a breach of one of the Ten Commandments. The storylines include a young man who murders a taxi driver, an impotent husband wrestling with his wife's unfaithfulness and two brothers drawn into a bitter feud over a family inheritance. Also included is a collection of made-for-TV films directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski.

In 'Pedestrian Subway' (1974) a schoolteacher comes to Warsaw in the hope of convincing his estranged wife not to file for divorce. 'First Love' (1974) follows a 17-year-old girl and her boyfriend as they come to terms with the idea of being parents after their doctor refuses to perform an abortion. In 'Personnel' (1975), teenager Romek (Juliusz Machulski) takes a job as a tailor at a Warsaw theatre company and quickly finds himself in the middle of a bitter argument between a colleague and an overbearing performer.

In 'The Calm' (1980), a young man seeks a fresh start following his release from a three-year prison sentence. He soon runs into trouble however, when his corrupt construction site boss forces him into a conflict with his fellow workers. Finally, in 'Short Working Day' (1981), a local Communist Party secretary deals with protesters in Radom, Poland following price rises introduced by the central government.
