Solanum nigrum (Black nightshade) and S.torvum (Turkey berry) are pharmaceutically imperative members of the Solanaceae family. The species are encompassed among the ingredients of various indigenous herbal medicines for treating a number of non-communicable diseases. The leaves and fruits of Black nightshade and Turkey berry extracts have assumed an intensified prominence in medicine and in health care industry. Besides, anticancer phenolic compounds have also been isolated from fruits and leaves of these plants. The presence of copious potentially significant secondary metabolites in both the species validate the exploration of their medicinal merits reinforced by its prominence in ethnic medicines. It has been conjectured that, the promising antioxidant, cardio active (aglycones), astypic, antimitotic, anti-microbial and antitumor properties of these plants could be subjugated in herbal medicine against oxidative stress, cancer, ageing, ischemic heart disease in dissolving thrombus, microbial infections and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) extenuating their use in traditional, complementary and alternative medicines.
