With Guns and Drums: Terrorism, Movements, and Antimovements in Ukraine, Palestine, and Northern Ireland provides a detailed and systematic study of Hamas, Novorossiya, and the PIRA through an analytical framework derived from social movement theories. Rather than examining these actors in isolation, the book situates them within the broader constellations of state and non-state actors involved in each conflict and explores terrorism as part of wider processes of social and political mobilisation at national and international levels. Although predominantly sociological in its analytical orientation, the study is situated within the field of international relations and, more specifically, at the intersection of two major theoretical traditions: realism and constructivism.
The book represents the culmination of more than twelve years of research, including nearly four years the author spent working as a political analyst in separatist-controlled areas of the Luhansk region in Ukraine.
