White Jacket

White-Jacket; or, The World in a Man-of-War is the 1850 novel by Herman Melville that was based on his life in the United States Navy aboard the Frigate The USS United States and the stories of other sailors. The novel focuses on a frigate named the USS Neversink and its exploits on the seas. White Jacket became instrumental in abolishing flogging aboard US Navy ships doe to its graphic descriptions.
