The Shadow Line - a Confession
Joseph Conrad
Conrad was a Polish-born English novelist. His success is even more amazing since he did not learn to speak English until he was in his 20's. Conrad's narrative style places him at the beginning of the Modernist period of literature. This novella published in 1917 depicts the development of a man's character after becoming the captain of a ship. The major themes in the book are nature of wisdom, and the value of experience and maturity. Conrad's excellent use of irony in telling this tale brings a depth to this sea story.
