Kees had been "pursued by Angela and David Bowie [together and separately], Warhol, Capote, Monie Love, Von Bulow, Jenny Jones, Malcolm McLaren, and the usualÉ characters found in Interview. He was pampered by Gore Vidal and tromped around with Tennessee Williams, had a bit part in a Serge Gainsbourg video and a Butthole Surfers video, and odes to him were written by poetic homo-revolutionaries.... He was seen in the company of women with recording contracts, entrepreneurs with hidden cameras, hazy men, religious men, money launderers..."
Tennessee Williams explained the Kees phenomenon as "ordinary people's fears of the beauty attached to the male body which fills them with atrocious and ultimately horrific desires."
And so Kees decided to disappear -- physically, spiritually, and mnemonically.
