This historical romance novel takes place in Minnesota during the 19th century. At sixteen, Anna Marie falls in love with John, a man serving in the Civil War. Their sexual encounter results in her becoming pregnant. Waiting for his return, she receives news of his death. Distraught, she accepts her fate in life until she sees John while visiting her sister. They rekindle their love and without explanation, Anna Marie leaves her husband and their children. Saddened and disappointed, Edward advertises for a housekeeper and nursemaid to help raise his abandoned children. Emma accepts the position with the condition that they marry.
