Silas King is a fervent atheist and lucid dreamer. At its most basic level, lucid dreaming is being aware you are dreaming and being able to control some or all aspects of the dream. He learned about this technique in a support group for people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and severe nightmares. One night, Silas is confronted by a robed figure that can travel through dreams that drags him into a war between dream entities he refers to as demons. All factions want Silas, but nobody is saying why he's so important. He thinks it has something to do with the father he never knew. Soon Silas' love interest and his friends are threatened by the dream entities attempting to manipulate Silas into joining them. Drug use and paranoia feed the fires of the situation. However, Silas is beginning to believe in his own power. As he learns more about why the demons are so interested in him, he has a much harder time reconciling his atheism with his new reality. Silas searches for the answer to his burning question: does God exist? All the while, he is bombarded with aspects of the supernatural that should make him a believer. Soon everything comes to a head, and Silas must make choices about belief, loyalty, love, and winning a war.
