The Fifth Dimension

The Fifth Dimension is the result of a course on aesthetics and neuroaesthetics created and directed by the architect, composer, artist and philosopher Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta in the years of 1997 and 1998 at the Childhood Education Institute of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon, Portugal. They are thirty books in fourteen volumes. This volume, containing two books, has five texts (or chapters). The first one is an introduction written by the famous Brazilian diplomat and philosopher Dário de Castro Alves. The second, Turning Point, is a kind of "explanation" of the project as a whole. The third text, entitled The Toy, deals with the child and the imaginary that we all share. Then we have a reflection very focused on a historical figure sometimes forgotten: Gioacchino de Fiore, or Joachim of the Flowers. Finally, we have Art and Cosmos, about perception and territory. Each volume is a different field in this formidable universe that is the Fifth Dimension. The set of books that make up this project deals with the metamorphosis of the human thought, over thousands of years, going through culinary, the universe of perfumes, of the music, of ideas and the history of art.
