Elastic Rayleigh Wave for Nondestructive Health Monitoring of Concrete Structure: Theory and Application for Strength and Crack Monitoring

Much of the existing infrastructures in many countries has been in service for many years and continues to be used. Due to a variety of physical, chemical, and environmental processes, concrete structures as well as other civil structures may get deteriorated or damaged in unexpected way. Therefore, structural health monitoring (SHM) of these structures to provide the necessary maintenance has become critically important to our society and is an emerging technology in civil engineering. Especially nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques that can detect and localize of damage in the structure or assess the current condition of the structure are desired to develop for successful applications of SHM. The research detailed in this book has complimentary efforts that seek to develop the NDE techniques for concrete structures using Rayleigh wave. Those include analytical and numerical study of Rayleigh wave propagation in solid media and development of strength gain and crack depth monitoring method in concrete structures. The contents should serve as a valuable guideline to the researcher as well as the graduate student who are interested in SHM of concrete structures.
