This novel is about a young aristocratic Charlestonian woman promised to a repugnant man by her parents to consolidate two plantations during the Civil War. She falls in love in Saratoga, NY with a Connecticut Yankee doctor and suffers discrimination by northerners even though she was against slavery and for the northern cause. She is strong in the face of adversity and triumphs over poverty. This novel is about the generosity and strength of friendship and it speaks of the courage it takes to live a gracious everyday life under dire circumstances.
